I find out that a lot of my friends are seeing shrinks and taking meds to regulate their moods. Long-term depression, bipolar, OCD- these are just some of the medical conditions that they mention. And they seem to be openly talking about it. I didn't grow up here, so employing shrinks/meds to deal with life's daily challenges is completely foreign to me. My parents were both physicians and have always been wary of over-medication.
I try not to judge people's lifestyle choices; but in looking at the role mood altering meds played in the recent celebrity deaths (Michael Jackson and DJ AM), I wonder if my friends are doing themselves more harm than good by relying too much on chemicals and psychiatrists? I wonder if that's the reason why that self-indulgent book "eat, pray, love" resonated with a lot of people and sold over a million copies? I hated that book, by the way. I thought the author was neurotic, self indulgent, and emotionally weak. But I guess a lot of people identified with her neuroses.
